2. Beautifully rude

This is my G3 entry of my LuRe Bingo Challenge (at LiveJournal) Prompt:  injury minor

Setting: this scene takes place before the first chapter of my Word Soap. It is a sequel to my first Bingo Story (Jealous guy) but you won’t miss any important clues if you didn’t read it.

During their ride over to the hospital, the nature of the emergency Reid was called in for became painfully clear. The local radio station had put some hyperactive and uninformed kid behind their microphone and he flooded his listeners with a waterfall of panic, drama and exaggeration. But amongst all that rubbish they could actually filter out some useful information. Drunk driver. Crash. School bus.
That last piece had made them look at each other.

“Ethan and Nat don’t ride the bus,” Luke quickly said, “but it’s still…”

“It always is when there are kids involved,” Reid mumbled, ready to jump out of the car the minute Luke stopped in front of the hospital. There was no greeting. Luke hadn’t expect any either. Every minute could literally be the difference between life and death. He watched Reid rush into Memorial and smiled. He felt proud. This was his guy.

“But you’re not, are you now? Mine, I mean.” Reid had stated only a few minutes ago and Luke had firmly objected. Reid hadn’t made him his yet, true. Not in the physical meaning of that phrase, at least. But there was no doubt in his mind. This was his guy.
When Reid disappeared into the building, Luke stopped staring and drove his car to the lot. He hadn’t been kidding when he told Reid he wouldn’t let him out of his sight. This had been a hectic day and it clearly wasn’t over yet, but Luke already knew how he wanted this day to end. And he was determined not to let anything get in their way.

His somewhat defiant feeling was replaced with bafflement when he walked in. The entrance hall looked like a war zone. Sounded like one too. There was crying. There was blood. Nurses running around. Doctors shouting orders.
To make sure he wouldn’t be in anyone’s way, Luke wanted to make his way to Reid’s office, but a small hand stopped him in his tracks.

“Help me.”

If there were ever two words that functioned as a magic wand to get Luke’s attention, it was this plea for help and he crouched down.
The boy didn’t seem to be badly hurt, but Luke was no doctor, so he just smiled as friendly as he could.

“How can I help you.”

“I can’t find my sister. She was in the bus too…”

“Are your parents notified yet?”

The boy nodded. “I expect them any minute. But I don’t want to tell them that I don’t know where she is.”

Luke nodded. Being a big brother himself, he totally understood.

“Let me check. What’s her name?”

“Marva Ellsworth.” When Luke came up, the boy grabbed his hand again. “Thanks.”

“I haven’t done anything yet,” Luke smiled, “but I’ll give it my best shot.”

He was in luck. Ali was there. The way she looked at him, made him rethink his earlier sense of fortune though. She wasn’t happy.

“Are you still dating that… Dr. Oliver?”

“I am…” Luke bit his lip. Apparently that was the wrong answer.

“I don’t get you anymore,” she almost hissed, “What’s there to like? He’s an asshole.”

“No, he’s not,” Luke narrowed his eyes. “He can behave like one, I’ll give you that, but that’s just one side of him.”

“Well, it happens to be the only side he’s showing us, so to me he is.”

“So this is a bad time to ask you a favor?”

For a moment Ali flashed anger, but when she looked into the friendly, soft, brown eyes of her friend, she smiled in spite of everything.

“Make it quick. I don’t want your boyfriend spitting fire at me…again…”

Boyfriend. It made Luke grin.

“There a kid out there,” Luke pointed at the boy who was watching him like a hawk, “and he’s looking for his sister. Marva Ellsworth.”

Ali didn’t even have to check her papers. She paled and so did Luke.

“She’s injured,” Luke concluded, knowing that Ali couldn’t give him any medical information. His friend nodded quickly.

“Badly?”

Another nod.

“Still alive?”

The way Alison looked at him, was his answer. Barely.

“Is she the reason Reid was called in?”

Another nod.

“He’s still in there. I can’t tell you anything else.”

When Luke returned, his facial expression was obviously telling. The boy cringed.

“Bad?”

Luke nodded and then found himself being pushed away a few feet, while the boy was surrounded by two adults.

“Charlie? Are you okay?”

“I hurt my leg. Minor stuff,” the boy’s voice was soft. “But Marv…”

“What?” The mother’s voice was shrill and loud, “Where’s Marva?”

“She’s in surgery…” Luke softly intervened and the woman looked him up and down.

“What are you doing here?”

Luke looked at the woman more closely. Did they know each other?

“I know who you are. I read papers, you know. You’re that rich poof. Stay away from my boy, faggot…”

“Mom,” Charlie looked embarrassed, while his mother was only capable of contempt. Luke turned to leave the scene, when he noticed Alison approaching. By the looks of her it was clear she’d heard the remark.

“Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth, I’m nurse Stewart and I’m here to inform you that Marva is in surgery right now. She suffered a huge blow on the head, but lucky for her we have a world famous neurosurgeon on our team who’s giving her his best.”

Mr. Ellsworth muttered something, while his wife looked in shock.

“And that surgeon wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for Luke Snyder over here, so you might consider a change of approach.”

“You’re not suggesting I apologize now, do you?” Mrs. Ellsworth snorted.

“Considering that Dr. Oliver is Mr. Snyder’s life partner, I strongly suggest you don’t repeat any of the name calling you just did, Mrs. Ellsworth.”

“What was your name again?” the mother sneered and Ali looked absolutely arrogant.

“My name is Nurse Stewart. And please take your complains to my Chief of Staff, because I’m sure my remarks will please him.”

“They please me for starters,” a calm voice behind her stated and seeing her fearsome staff member, she paled. Seeing a small flicker of amusement and approval in the blue eyes, brought all the blood back in her face though.
Reid handed her the status.

“Please inform the parents. I’ll be in my office.”

With a telling grin he extended his hand to Luke and his blond accepted with a smile. Reid had been absolutely rude to the parents, but Luke was not complaining this time. His face only showed pride when he wrapped himself around Reid’s waist.

Reid’s sigh conveyed fatigue and after closing the door, Luke leaned against it.

“Do you want me to leave?”

It took a while before the question reached Reid’s brain.

“What?” His index finger signaled Luke towards him and the moment Luke was close enough, Reid grabbed his wrists and pulled him in. “What happened to not letting me out of your sight?”

“You look exhausted. Maybe you want to rest…”

“I do. But you don’t have to leave for that…”

Reid led Luke to the small couch in the office space, dropped himself on it and dragged Luke with him. Or, to be precise, on him. Without any hesitation their lips found each other and it didn’t take them very long to heat up.

“How tired are you…” Luke’s whisper made Reid growl.

“Tempting, but I don’t want us to… here…”

Luke smiled. “Me neither,” he agreed, but not discouraged, “So how about a little appetizer…”

“I’ve been paying attention, Mr. Snyder. Little is not the description I would use…”
His grin was wicked, his eyes dark and Luke almost lost himself in them. Reid broke the spell by pulling Luke’s face to his for another kiss.

“Did you happen to lock the door?”

“I did,” Luke chuckled.

“Ah…a man on a mission,” Reid softly squeezed Luke’s chin. “I like. A lot.”

“Sttt,” with an almost atypical self-assured move Luke pulled off Reid’s scrubs and softly laughed when he noticed Reid’s surprise. He dove in to collect his reward, but didn’t linger on the lips for too long. He had new territory to discover. When he felt the doctor shiver, he looked up.

“Cold?” His tease was evident.

“Hot,” Reid hissed, but before he could say anything else, he gasped when Luke found a way down.

“This is just…”

“Dr. Oliver, are you in there?”

“I wish,” Reid grumbled, watching Luke coming up with a brave smile.

“What!” he shouted at the closed door, but Luke couldn’t even feel sorry for whoever was at the other side.

“It’s Marve Ellsworth, doctor…you left specific orders to…”

“Yeah yeah, I know. I’ll be out in a sec.”

With one swift sweep he put his scrubs back on, grabbed Luke’s head and pulled him in for a kiss.

“The universe is mocking us…”

“We’ll get there,” Luke smiled, “and I can’t wait…”

“Now you’re talking,” Reid gave him one last telling grin before he opened the door and let reality in. “To be continued.”
